About the Bakehouse

Bakehouse On King seeks to meet the need for high quality, artisan baked goods and pastries across southern Pennsylvania. Whether it’s for retail or wholesale, Executive Pastry Chef Kristen Richards and our dedicated staff focus on producing traditional bakery items that appeal to today’s tastes. We prize traditions such as seasonal ingredients, natural leavening and slow fermentation in the creation of quality whole grain breads and pastries.

We invite you to try the Bakehouse team’s handiwork. Our boutique retail space is located in the heart of downtown Lancaster at 16 W. King St. with convenient parking at the Central Parking Garage. Stop in to enjoy breakfast, try a savory pastry for lunch or select a fresh loaf to share with your family at dinner.

On Our Shelves

Flour, water, salt and starter.

At Bakehouse On King, we approach bread-making with patience. We take our time and focus on our ingredients. Our mother sourdough starter creates naturally leavened breads that have longer fermentation cycles. This deepens the flavor while making each loaf more digestible as bran is broken down and phytic acid is neutralized. The proof is in our loaves.

We are committed to using local flours and grains as often as possible and favor those from Castle Valley Mill in Bucks County and Small Valley Milling in Halifax, Pa. We also use ingredients from King Arthur Flour, America’s oldest flour company.

Fresh Breads

Offered Daily.

For all of our breads, we use pre-ferments that mature at room temperature for 12-16 hours. Because of this, we have come up with a schedule for when our breads are available with rotating specialty loaves mixed in with favorites such as Country Sour and Pullman Brioche. (Our specialty breads are first come, first serve. For orders of more than four loaves of specialty bread, please call 72 hours in advance to reserve.)

Our bakery crew gives the similar level of care and attention to our pastries. We put a modern spin on traditional bakery items such as croissants and buns by bringing in local and seasonal ingredients. In addition, we also offer a selection of cookies, brownies and seasonal pies.
